Interpreter Policies and Procedures

  1. Interpreters are contracted on a semester basis and will be booked for the 15-week semester based on need (Refer to number 10).
  2. Payment will be at the hourly rate of $75.00 for Certified Interpreters and $65.00 for non-Certified Interpreters, with a two-hour minimum. *Note there must be a 1-hour break between assignments to be paid for the 2 hours.
  3. Interpreters are expected to be available for the full 2-hour time-period and should ALWAYS be ready and willing and able to work the full 2 hours.
  4. Direct deposits will occur two times a month. (15th and the 30th)
  5. Electronic timesheets must be submitted by the 1st and 15th each month, otherwise, payment will be submitted the following pay period.

  6. a) Classes booked with a ONE-hour break or more in between will be paid as two separate assignments.
    For example: 2:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m. (2 hours) then, 4:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. (2 hours). 2 hours plus 2 hours for a total of 4 hours will be paid.
    b) If there is 30 minutes or less between assignments, Interpreter will be expected to be ON-CALL and paid through.
    For example: 10:15 a.m.-11:45 a.m., then 12:15 p.m.-1:15 p.m. Interpreter will be paid 10:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. straight through (3 hours).
    c) If there is more than 30 minutes between assignments (but less than one (1) hour), no payment for down time.
    For example: 8:30 am-10:15 am then 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m., then 12:45 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Total hours paid: 1.75 plus 1.25 plus 1.25. Grand total: 4.25 hours.
    If you would like to remain on-call during the 30–60-minute interval, please speak with the Deaf Services Supervisor and pending interpreter need may be approved. No guarantees.
    d) Hours always recorded to the nearest ¼ hour, always to the benefit of the Interpreter. For example, an assignment that begins at 6:10 p.m. you are paid starting at 6:00 p.m. An assignment that ends at 9:05 p.m., you are paid until 9:15 p.m.
  7. The Interpreters are to report to Deaf Services for re-assignment if classes are canceled or students are no-shows.
  8. When possible, Deaf Services will provide the Interpreter with forty-eight (48) hours notice when services will not be needed. This will free Deaf Services from the obligation to pay compensation for services. If a sudden illness or class cancellation makes services for a scheduled assignment unnecessary on short notice (less than 48 hours), the Interpreter will be obligated to cover any other assignment request at that time. If the interpreter declines this request, he/she will not be paid for the originally scheduled assignment.
  9. Interpreters are to wait for students outside the classroom. Interpreters will wait 10 minutes for each class hour, and if the student or instructor does not show up, you are to check in with Deaf Services for a possible reassignment.
  10. In the event a student withdraws from a class, or a class is canceled for the remainder of the semester, the Interpreter will first be reassigned. If reassignment is not possible, the Interpreter will be paid for the next two (2) times he/she was scheduled to work in that assigned class.
  11. All Interpreters are expected to honor their commitments for the full semester. Absences are to be reserved for unexpected or emergency circumstances.
  12.  In the event the Interpreter cannot cover his/her assignment, the Interpreter is expected to secure his/her own substitute by listing a request via interpreter Google Group. Once said Interpreter has a committed substitute, he/she is required to report this information via email immediately to Deaf Services/RAS and to the team Interpreter as well. As a courtesy, let the student know also.
  13. Interpreters can secure coverage by emailing all interpreters using: [email protected] ONCE confirmed, please email [email protected] and the team interpreter confirming the coverage.
  14. Interpreters are expected to attend class on time. Two documented late arrivals without appropriate notification will result in immediate removal from the assignment.
  15. Interpreters unable to continue with assignments are required to provide one-week written notice submitted to the Accommodations Specialist. Deaf Services will obtain permanent replacements. The interpreter will be paid up to the day of replacement.
  16. The Interpreter will not be paid when the college is closed for snow days, holidays, and emergencies. Interpreters are responsible for checking closing information. Email blasts can be found via your Bergen email. In addition, closing information will be on the college website (www.bergen.edu).
  17. Interpreters will be paid for early dismissal days if he/she is already on campus, up to the time of closing if he/she is scheduled.
  18. Interpreters will not interpret written exams into ASL or any form of sign language: only verbal instructions should be interpreted.
  19. Interpreters will not provide tutoring, academic help, or personal support for students under any circumstances. Violations of said policy and breach of the Code of Professional Conduct is grounds for immediate dismissal.
  20. Interpreters will not engage in conversations with professors or staff about students which they are providing interpreting services for. Interpreters are to refer inquiries to Deaf Services.
  21. Interpreters are to adhere and uphold policies of the Deaf Services and the RID Code of Professional Conduct. Violations and/or breaches of contract may result in immediate termination dismissal.
