The Sidney Silverman Library recognizes its integral role in support of the college’s mission and curriculum. We will provide our diverse community of learners with information resources and dynamic services in a welcoming environment that promotes academic excellence and fosters lifelong learning.

About Sidney Silverman

The Library is named in honor of Dr. Sidney Silverman, the founding president of Bergen Community College. The naming ceremony was held on Founder’s Day, October 22, 1987 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the College. Dr. Silverman served as president from 1967 until his retirement in 1977. Upon his retirement, Dr. Silverman was named President Emeritus and helped to found the Bergen Community College Foundation.

Dr. Silverman received a Bachelor’s Degree from the City College of New York and a Doctoral Degree from New York University where he was one of the first to earn a doctorate in the field of adult and continuing education. Prior to coming to Bergen, Dr. Silverman served as Director of the Adult and Evening Division, Dean of Administration and Dean of Faculty at Bronx Community College.
