Tuition Waiver Registration Information

 

When can I register under the Tuition Waiver Registration program?

Special Registration Dates are included in the the Registration and Academic Calendars:

Registration can be completed via the Bergen Portal/ WebAdvisor for Students (accessible at my.bergen.edu) on the designated dates except participants of the tuition waiver program as verification documents, including NJ Department of Labor forms, must be provided in person.

Supporting documentation must be presented to the proper office: either Office of Financial Aid (www.bergen.edu/fa ) or Bursar’s Office (www.bergen.edu/bursar ).

 Senior Citizen

  • Eligibility Requirements: Bergen County residents who have reached their 65th birthday prior to the first day of classes.
  • Coverage:
    • Covered: Tuition and technology fee.
    • Not covered/student’s responsibility: All other fees.
  • Enrollment Procedure:
    • Students may register on or after the Tuition Waiver Registration Day.
    • Must present valid proof of age and residency to the Bursar’s Office.

 

Unemployed

  • Eligibility Requirements:
    • Bergen County residents who have been in the labor market (full-time employment or active pursuit of full-time employment, or a combination of the two) for at least two years and who are unemployed or in receipt of layoff notice are entitled to enroll in credit courses on a tuition-free basis.
    • Enrollment is on a space available basis and registration must occur on the designated days only.
    • Refer to below Notes 1, 2, and 3.
  • Coverage:
    • Covered: Tuition.
    • Not covered/Student’s responsibility: All fees.
  • Enrollment Procedure:
    • Students may register on or after the Tuition Waiver Registration Day.
    • Students must exhaust eligibility for financial aid and present a certified Unemployed Persons Job Training Form.
    • Students must submit this statement each semester or session, and it must be dated within 30 days of the tuition waiver registration date for that semester or session.

National Guard

  • Eligibility Requirements: Degree-Seeking Bergen County residents who are active members of the New Jersey National Guard or a child or spouse of such member who was killed in the performance of duties while on active duty with the NJ National Guard.
  • Coverage:
    • Covered: Up to 16 credits of tuition.
    • Not covered/ Student’s responsibility: All fees.
  • Enrollment Procedure:
    • Student must exhaust eligibility for financial aid and present valid certification from their unit when registering.
    • May register anytime during registration.

 

Volunteer Fire, First Aid & Rescue Squad Members & Families

  • Eligibility Requirements: New Jersey residents who are active members in good standing of a volunteer fire company, first aid or rescue squad, and dependent children and spouse of a volunteer may enroll in a county college.
  • Coverage:
    • Covered: Tuition credit of up to $600 per year, but not to exceed $2400 over a four year period. See Note 2.
    • Not covered/Student’s responsibility: All fees and tuition in excess of $600.
  • Enrollment Procedure:
    • Students may register on or after the Tuition Waiver Registration Day.

 

Bergen County Employee

  • Eligibility Requirements: Person employed by the County of Bergen.
  • Coverage:
    • Covered: 6 credits without payment of tuition, provided space is available. See Note 4
    • Not covered/Student’s responsibility: All fees.
  • Enrollment Procedure:
    • Students may register on or after the Tuition Waiver Registration Day.

NOTES:

Note 1: Tuition-free enrollment is permitted only to the extent that federal or state financial aid does not cover tuition cost; therefore, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by June 1 for the fall semester waiver; October 1 for the spring semester waiver. Contact the Office of Financial Aid (www.bergen.edu  ) for additional information.

Note 2: The student must pay applicable fees. All registrations under this program are on a space-available basis.

Note 3: To be eligible for the tuition waiver, you must submit to Bergen the New Jersey Department of Labor’s Unemployed Person Job Training Form (Tuition Waiver Program).
You must submit this statement each semester or session and register in person. It must be dated within 30 days of the tuition waiver registration date for that semester or session.

Note 4: County employee must bring in a letter from their employer. All prerequisites and Basic Skills Testing requirements must be met.
