The Surgical Technology program at Bergen Community College is the only program in the state of New Jersey and the first to be nationally accredited. Major hospitals throughout New Jersey and the entire Eastern seaboard seek graduates of the Surgical Technology Program, often months before graduation. Our new facilities include an integrated three room suite incorporating a state-of-the-art classroom, fully equipped “mock” operating room reflective of a real hospital OR, and a sterilization/prep room. Students learning in this type of environment are better prepared to enter their clinical externship because of the hands-on practice and real life situations taught here.

Prerequisites: High school graduation or GED is required.

Job Description: To comprehend the theoretical basis of surgical technology and function competently, students are educated to possess a solid foundation of knowledge in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, surgical procedures, and surgical instruments and equipment. They must be meticulously educated in antisepsis, aseptic technique, disinfection, sterilization and emergency procedures.

A certified surgical technologist (CST) is a member of the surgical team who works with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.

Ideal Personality Profile: The ability to perform under pressure in stressful and emergency situations is a quality essential to CSTs. A stable temperament, a strong sense of responsibility, considerable patience, and concern for order are required. Manual dexterity and physical stamina are vital. They must be able to work quickly, but accurately, and must be oriented to detail, yet able to integrate a number of activities according to priority. They must be keenly sensitive to the needs of the patient as well as to the needs of other members of the surgical team. Individuals who practice this profession have a strong desire to help others and make a valuable contribution to society.
