Lectures, Telescope Viewings at Bergen Community College Put Universe in Focus

This fall, Bergen Community College is your gateway to the stars.
In celebration of the “International Year of Astronomy 2009,” Bergen will hold a series of events designed to give students, teachers and the public a closer look at the universe. The events include two lectures by renowned astronomers, a citizen’s meeting on global warming and telescope observations in the College’s Emil Buehler Trust Observatory. All events are free, open to the public and take place at Bergen’s main campus, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. The International Year of Astronomy at Bergen Events:
• Dr. Steele Hill Lecture
Thursday, October 29, 12:30 p.m., Moses Family Meeting and Training Center (Technology Education Center room 128)
Dr. Hill will discuss the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) project, which is a joint effort between NASA and the European Space Agency. The SOHO project is an in-depth study of the sun and its effect on the solar system. Dr. Hill joined SOHO in 1996 and co-authored the 2006 photo book “The Sun.” Four hours of NJAAPT continuing education credits will be awarded to high school teachers attending the lecture.
• Dr. Jim Gates Lecture
Thursday, November 5, 12:30 p.m., Moses Family Meeting and Training Center (Technology Education Center room 128)
Dr. Gates is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-educated physicist and University of Maryland professor. He will discuss supersymmetry, a focus of his studies, the large Hadron collider at CERN and its implications. He was recently appointed to President Barack Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Four hours of NJAAPT continuing education credits will be awarded to high school teachers attending the lecture.
• Citizen’s Meeting on Global Warming
Saturday, November 7, 1 p.m., Moses Family Meeting and Training Center (Technology Education Center room 128)
Led by Bergen professor Roger Opstbaum, this event will feature a discussion on global warming, including a question and answer portion. Additionally – weather permitting – the Buehler Columbia Amateur Astronomers Association will lead a viewing of the sun through solar telescopes.
• Evening Telescope Observations
Every Saturday Evening, 8:30 p.m. (through October) and 8 p.m. (November through February), Emil Buehler Trust Observatory (Technology Education Center)
The College’s Buehler Columbia Amateur Astronomers Association opens the doors to the observatory for evening observations of celestial objects. Visitors will receive guided access to three state-of-the-art, 16-inch reflecting telescopes, which are used to observe objects such as the moon. In the event of inclement weather, viewings will be cancelled.
Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling nearly 17,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs and certificate programs.
