Bergen Community College Speaker Series Brings Big Names to Campus


Pulitzer Prize-Winner Junot Diaz and Political Humorist Bill Maher to Speak This Fall

A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, a former U.S. congressman and a popular comedian and political commentator – among other notable personalities – will appear at Bergen Community College this fall for the 2009 Speaker Series.

The Speaker Series, which begins Friday, October 16 with education author Dr. Mark Milliron and concludes Wednesday, December 2 with Islamic philosopher Dr. Seyyed Hossein Nasr, gives students and the public an opportunity to participate in lectures conducted by stars of stage and screen, former politicians and scholars. Each speaker visits the College to address topical issues or to coincide with heritage/awareness-week celebrations. Most Speaker Series events are free and open to the public; all take place at Bergen’s main campus, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus. For more information, please call (201) 447-7215.

The Fall 2009 Speaker Series Schedule:

• Dr. Mark Milliron
Friday, October 16, 10 a.m., Gymnasium
The founder and chief executive of Catalyze Learning International (CLI), a consulting group for the education, government and business sectors, will serve as the keynote speaker for the second All College Day at Bergen. Among many affiliations, Dr. Milliron is the board chair of the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education. He has also authored many books and articles on education, technology and leadership. Please note this is the only event in the Speaker Series not open to the public.

• Junot Diaz
Monday, October 19, 1:40 p.m. and 3:10 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
Author of Drown and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, his fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, African Voices, Best American Short Stories (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000), in Pushcart Prize XXII and in The O'Henry Prize Stories 2009. Diaz is the fiction editor of the Boston Review and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

• Col. Dennis Devery
Thursday, October 22, 12:30 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
The Chief of Staff for the New Jersey Army National Guard will draw upon his 27 years of military experience when he discusses “Organizational Leadership – The Five Fundamentals.” The seminar is presented by the College’s Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honors society.

• Mickey Edwards
Wednesday, November 4, 1:40 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
Former U.S. Rep Mickey Edwards (R-Oklahoma) will discuss his 16 years in Congress as a member of the House leadership and committees such as Budget and Appropriations. Since leaving office, Edwards has taught at Harvard, Georgetown and Princeton. He is also a frequent author and commentator on current politics.

• Bill Maher
Friday, November 6, 1:40 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
Never lacking an opinion, the Bergen County native will share his sometimes-controversial political and social views during his address at the College. He is the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and former host of Comedy Central and ABC’s Politically Incorrect.

Wednesday, November 11, 11:30 a.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
He is a Tony-winner (M. Butterfly), a Hollywood veteran (Jurassic Park) and a TV-regular (Oz, Law & Order Special Victims Unit) who will highlight Bergen’s Asian Heritage Week as keynote speaker. Wong will discuss diversity in the United States and the personal struggles he outlines in his book, Following Foo: The Electronic Adventures of the Chestnut Man.

• Dr. John Corvino
Monday, November 16, 11:30 a.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
A gay-rights advocate and scholar, Dr. Corvino comes to Bergen as the keynote speaker of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Week. Dr. Corvino has discussed gay rights issues for nearly 20 years, visiting organizations throughout the United States. An accomplished author, Dr. Corvino’s work has appeared in many forms of media, including a weekly column on 365gay.com.

• Dr. Seyyed Hossein Nasr
Wednesday, December 2, 1:30 p.m., Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre
The Iranian-born Dr. Nasr, who has lectured around the world, is a professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University. A respected Islamic scholar and philosopher, Dr. Nasr has written hundreds of books and articles.

Bergen Community College is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling nearly 17,000 students in Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degree programs and certificate programs. More than 15,000 students are enrolled in non-credit, professional courses through the Division of Continuing Education, the Institute for Learning in Retirement, the Philip J.
