Ms. Christine Henkel

Department: Allied Health
Please list your academic & professional credentials:
I received an A.A.S. from Bergen Community College, a B.A. from William Paterson University, and a M.S. from the University of Bridgeport. I am also a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
Biography: After raising my children, I decided to return to school to study ultrasound. I graduated from the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Bergen Community College in 1990. I was hired as an adjunct instructor in the program in 1991 and then in 1995 became a full time faculty member. I served as the Allied Health Department Head from 2000 to 2003.
What made you decide to become a faculty/staff member?: Originally, my goal was to work part time in an OB/GYN office. However, as a student, I became interested in becoming a clinical instructor in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Upon graduation and acquisition of my ultrasound credentials, the Program Director invited me to become an adjunct instructor. Naturally, I jumped at the chance. In addition to the clinical courses, I also taught a few labs. It was at that point that I realized my love of teaching.
How do you personally define success in the learning outcomes of your students?: There is nothing more rewarding for me than to go to a clinical site and visit my students. They have not only become practicing sonographers but also my peers.
What have you learned from your students?: One of the reasons that I enjoy teaching at Bergen Community College is that my students are at different stages in their academic and professional careers. Many also come from a wide array of backgrounds and nationalities. This diversity has broadened my understanding of other cultures and generations.
