Our Mission

In the Women and Gender Studies program, students explore and critique the social construction of categories such as gender, sexuality, race, and class both historically and in contemporary societies. Using an interdisciplinary approach that is historical, global, and multicultural, our program strives to offer courses which consider the complexity and diversity of men’s and women’s lived experiences in the United States and globally.

The Women and Gender Studies program introduces students to material and methodologies designed to develop and hone critical thinking and analytical talents. Women and Gender Studies coursework is varied, rigorous, and challenging. Students will learn to identify and interrogate the formation and perpetuation of social, economic, and political hierarchies that have their roots in gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity, and nationality.

As an interdisciplinary major, Women and Gender Studies examines women’s roles and achievements locally and globally. In earning an Associate of Arts degree in Women and Gender Studies, students will meet the general criteria of the liberal arts degree and complete two (2) electives in Women and Gender Studies. Various perspectives are presented through such courses as Women in History, Sociology of Gender Roles, Women in Literature, Women and Religion, Sociology of Gender Roles, Changing Roles of Women, and Introduction to LBGTQ Cultures.
