My friend Mariah and I are very close. We spend a lot of time together, so much time that, in fact, we sometimes get tired of each other. the other day, Mariah called me when I was at work. I didn't really have the time for a phone call, and especially not for her to for a long time about something I didn't really care about. I picked up the phone and said, "Hey, I can't talk right now!" which I thought would make her immediately.

But instead of , she blurted out, "Listen up, I just have to tell you what just happened to me today at the gas station. This guy I knew in high school was there and..." I knew I was in for it. Mariah was just going to continue talking until she , and I was just going to have to go along with it.

She continued talking as I put the phone down in my lap and my boss walked by my desk. I could hear her muffled voice from the receiver, and running on about whatever trivial thing happened to her that day.... I wanted to ," !" but I couldn't bring myself to interrupt her ms office cell phone clip partso rudely. I picked the phone up off my lap and , disturbing her incessant chirping: "Hey Mariah, what are you --"

It was no use. She ignored my interjection and continued , or at least at her cell phone, anyway. I listened for a moment: she was something about her new haircut or a boy named Mark or something of the sort.

Finally, I came out with a wailing "HEY MARIAH!" and she .

"What?" she said.

"Hey, I'm driving right now and I can't talk... There's a cop behind me." I came up with the perfect excuse to get off the phone.

"Oh, that's fine," Mariah said. "I didn't mean to

like that... Anyway, call me later when you're free. Bye." She hung up and I put the phone neatly on my desk.

Works every time, I thought to myself.
