Our Mission

Horticulture is the science and art of growing plants. The horticulture program at Bergen Community College focuses on ornamental plants, those valued for their appearance, beauty or fragrance, as opposed to those grown for human consumption as in agriculture or utilitarian value as in textiles or other industries. The mission of the horticulture program at Bergen Community College is to train students in the art, science and business of the ornamental plant industries and developing their abilities to research, evaluate and organize information to present their findings before teachers, peers, employers or clients. Our horticulture faculty encourage creative problem solving, teamwork and individual effort, hands-on learning, professionalism, and entrepreneurship in our students.

Career Paths

The Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.)- Science Technology, Horticulture Option or the Landscape/Design/Build Option are designed to provide students with the coursework needed to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a bachelor’s degree in horticulture. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a pathway to careers as a botanist, consultant, horticultural therapist, landscape architect, plant breeder or plant pathologist. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Bergen Community College faculty and Career Services as they begin to explore career options.

Transfer Opportunities

Students pursuing the Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.)- Science Technology, Horticulture Option or Landscape/Design/Build Option can transfer into majors, such as horticulture.
