Determine if Online Education is Right for You

We understand that online education may not be the right choice for everyone. To help you in deciding if you should apply to an online program, please consider the characteristics of a successful online student.

  • Possess great time management skills: Students should be able to set aside up to 15 hours per course to adequately participate in all required assignments and tasks.
  • Be self-motivated: Online education requires students to be able to work independently. A successful student will remain motivated throughout the semester, but will also be confident in asking questions for clarification.
  • Possess good writing skills: So much of your online coursework and communication will need to be written. Successful students will use resources such as tutoring and free spell-check and grammar-checking apps to enhance the accuracy of their work.
  • Be tech savvy: Students should understand how to use the learning management system and all of its tools.
  • Be college ready: The admissions team will determine readiness by assessing transcripts, life experience and, in some cases, asking students to take a placement test.

Online Technology Requirements
  • Students will access their online courses utilizing Canvas – an online learning management system.
  • Students should have access to a desktop computer or laptop.
  • High speed internet.
  • Note that a webcam, microphone and/or headset will be required for some courses.

Online Student Services and Support

The Center for Online Learning provides students with the virtual support and services they need throughout their studies.  Students can take advantage of tutoring, writing assistance, academic advising, career services and much more – all from the convenience of their own home.

Additionally, online students will have virtual access to all student services offered at the College. For example, students can register for classes online, pay their bill online and access financial aid information.

Student Success Coaches

Upon admission to the Center for Online Learning, students will work with a student success coach. Student success coaches will assist with the transition to a student’s online academic studies, provide guidance on a student’s path to completion and serve as a resource to connect students to Bergen services.
