SUMMARY:From Here to Equality: A Virtual Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Bergenfield Public Library\, Englewood Public Library\, Fort Lee Public Library\, Hackensack’s Johnson Public Library\, and Teaneck Public Library have partnered to host authors and scholars A. Kirsten Mullen and William Darity\, Jr. for a virtual discussion of their book From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century on Thursday\, January 14 at 7:00pm. \nFrom Here to Equality examines the economic divide between black and white Americans and makes a comprehensive case for how a reparations program for U.S. descendants of slavery could close that gap. Mullen and Darity assert that today’s black-white wealth gap originated with the unfulfilled promise of 40 acres in 1865\, and that the payment of this debt in the 21st century is feasible—and at least 155 years overdue.

SUMMARY:Reparations for Black Descendants of Slavery
DESCRIPTION:This presentation by Dr. Thomas Craemer will address historical demands for reparations to the Black descendants of the enslaved in the United States and current estimates of the outstanding debt. Dr. Thomas Craemer is an associate professor of public policy at the University of Connecticut. His experience of growing up in Germany shaped his interest in questions of race and racism\, as well as his views on reparations. He feels that reparations have potential emotional benefits for both sides\, the providers as well as the recipients\, and that reparations can facilitate reconciliation. Craemer will address some historical precedents for slavery reparations\, albeit in the wrong direction\, that is to the descendants of slave owners rather than the enslaved. These historical examples can help us in the design and implementation of future federal reparations policies benefiting the Black descendants of the enslaved in the United States.
