SUMMARY:Bergenstages presents The Laramie Project
DESCRIPTION:The Laramie Project\nBy Moisés Kaufman\nDirected by Dr. Leigh Jonaitis\nOct. 27\, 28\, Nov. 2\, 3 & 4\, 2023 7:30 PM\nOct. 28 Nov. 4\, 2023 at 2:00 PM\nEnder Hall Lab Theatre \nTwenty five years ago in October 1998\, a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped\, severely beaten\, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie\, Wyoming. His bloody\, bruised\, and battered body was not discovered until the next day\, and he died several days later in an area hospital. His name was Matthew Shepard\, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half\, in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. The Laramie Project is a breathtaking collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

SUMMARY:Iranian Musician Performs
DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American sound/performance artist Sholeh Asgary and recording artist/clarinetist David Rothenberg will perform in an evening of new music and improvisation on Friday\, November 3 at 7 p.m. in Gallery Bergen at the main campus. Shabah e Baad (Ghost Winds)\, the performance\, is a part of the ongoing exhibition at the gallery\, The Cup Flows Over: Art from the Soul of Iran presenting the art of contemporary Iranian artists from Iran and the diaspora. This event is free and open to the public. Reservations can be made at Eventbrite. \n  \nIn the performance of Shabah e Baad (Ghost Winds)\, Asgary vocalizes recordings of water bodies transcribed into notation for voice with the help of electronics and synthesizers for notes beyond human capability. The arrangement and layering of the notes create sonic landscapes that cast reflections of silence\, dissonance\, and possible occasional moments of harmony. Asgary explores illegibility\, loss\, and mutant transformation through the near-impossible task of performing voice for water. This work is inspired and developed through her ongoing research into indigenous Iranian underground aqueducts known as qanats and the lesser-known ancient practice of wedding them as an exploration of water scarcity\, human displacement\, and ecological loss within the context of intricate erotics and economies of reciprocity between human bodies and waterways. Asgary’s performance includes variations on her original compositions by Atabak Elyasi. On this version of the piece\, Asgary will be joined by David Rothenberg on clarinets and water sounds. \n\nArtist Biographies:\nSholeh Asgary (b. Iran 1982) is an interdisciplinary artist whose works implicate the viewer participant in future mythological excavations\, bridging large swathes of time and history through water\, light\, imaging\, voice\, and sound.  Featured in Art in America’s 2022 “New Talent Issue” and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts triennial exhibition\, “Bay Area Now 9\,” Asgary’s work has been supported by such institutions as Headlands Center for the Arts\, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art\, MASS MoCA\, and ARoS Kunstmuseum. Asgary is a UCLA Art|Sci Collective member and a Lecturer at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and California College of the Arts. \nMusician and philosopher David Rothenberg wrote Why Birds Sing\, Bug Music\, Survival of the Beautiful and many other books\, published in at least eleven languages. He has more than forty recordings out\, including One Dark Night I Left My Silent House which came out on ECM\, and most recently In the Wake of Memories and Faultlines. He has performed or recorded with Pauline Oliveros\, Peter Gabriel\, Ray Phiri\, Suzanne Vega\, Scanner\, Elliott Sharp\, Umru\, Iva Bittová\, and the Karnataka College of Percussion.  Whale Music is his latest book. Nightingales In Berlin is his latest film. Secret Sounds of Ponds comes out in early 2024. Rothenberg is Distinguished Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

SUMMARY:Bergenstages presents Man of La Mancha
DESCRIPTION:Man of La Mancha\nBook by Dale Wasserman\nMusic by Mitch Leigh\, Lyrics by Joe Darion\nDirected by Prof. Jim Bumgardner\nMusic Directed by Prof. Jess Abrams\nDec.\, 1\, 2 7\, 8 & 9\, 2023 at 7:30 PM\nDec. 2 & 9\, 2023 at 2:00 PM\nCiccone Theatre \nBased on The Adventures of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes\, Man of La Mancha is a comic tragedy of mankind’s struggle to better both himself and the world in which he lives. A tale of the adventures of an eccentric idealist in a hostile\, greedy and cynical world. As with all the best allegorical tales\, the oppressive mood of the fight against eternal evil is heightened by the sometimes comic\, sometimes dramatic attempts of the hero to right all the wrongs of the world. Although his efforts at times seem puny and pathetic\, the audience is left in no doubt as to the purity of intent that he instils into his self-imposed crusade. The story is both very entertaining and very moving\, and will warm the heart of everyone whose spirits were ever raised by the prospect of a victory by the underdog against all the odds. The score is a musical delight\, and contains one of the most moving moments in musical theatre as Don Quixote relates his personal credo in “The Impossible Dream.”

SUMMARY:Mouse and Brush: Bergen Community College Faculty Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Mouse and Brush: Bergen Community College Faculty Art Show (December 6\, 2023- January 26\, 2024) \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, December 6\, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in Gallery Bergen \n Gallery Bergen presents “Mouse and Brush: the BCC Faculty Art Show” featuring the digital\, handmade\, and performance artwork of Bergen Community College Visual Arts faculty. This year’s exhibition highlights examples of new works in experimental filmmaking\, sound art\, performance art\, as well as traditional media including painting and photography. \nThe opening reception takes place on Wednesday\, December 6 at 6:00 p.m. in Gallery Bergen featuring a special performance of “Renditions for Violin & Electronics\,” a film and sound art collaboration between Bergen Cinema Studies professor Gregg Biermann and violinist/filmmaker Monteith McCollum. Biermann filmed McCollum playing the violin from various angles\, many of them close-ups of his hands\, the strings and the bow. These images have been broken into small video samples that can be launched from a MIDI device\, allowing them to be triggered and played. During the performance\, the two will stand about 20 feet apart: Biermann manipulating the prerecorded samples and McCollum playing his violin\, responding to the sound samples. Meanwhile\, prerecorded images connected with the sound samples will play on the back wall\, as will images captured in real-time from a tiny camera mounted on McCollum’s instrument. This event is free and open to the public. Due to limited seating\, tickets can be obtained by making a reservation on EventBrite.
