Bergen Community College student Miseon Shin is studying nursing with the goal to become a nurse practitioner.
Shin, of Ridgefield Park, moved to the United States from Korea in 2015. “I chose Bergen Community College because I wanted to further my education as a Korean national citizen who was new to the country and culture of America,” said Shin.
Shin chose to enroll at Bergen because a friend who is an ICU registered nurse in New York City recommended Bergen’s nursing program and its nursing faculty. Shin has had positive experiences within the nursing program at the College.
“Bergen Community College’s nursing program has provided me with more education and learning opportunities that have helped me to learn and grow as a person, student, and healthcare provider,” said Shin who currently works at a neurology outpatient clinic with a large population of Korean speaking patients.
Shin feels that Bergen’s nursing program has prepared her to assist these patients who are not familiar with the American healthcare system. She said that she has been taught “how to approach them to make sure they receive the appropriate healthcare interventions and services that best serve their needs.”
“My peers have been very helpful with my success at Bergen Community College,” said Shin. “They are composed of people from different backgrounds, ages and cultures.” Shin said her Bergen journey has been a “great learning experience” thus far.
Shin expects to graduate in 2025.
