Our Mission
The mission of the diagnostic medical sonography program at Bergen Community College is to train students in diagnostic medical sonography techniques and equipment in order to prepare them for the licensure examination to work in the field. Diagnostic medical sonographers work in close association with radiologists and physicians to provide quality images to aid in diagnostic interpretation. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the diagnostic medical sonography program is a competency-based education and provides a curriculum sequence in order for the students to correlate didactic, lab, and clinical skills sufficiently. Students are required to complete all three specialties including abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology, and cardiac sonography in the program. Students are eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exam upon completion of the program.
Career Paths
The Health Professions Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) in diagnostic medical sonography is designed to provide students with the coursework and clinical training needed to enter into the field as a diagnostic medical sonographer. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a pathway to careers in diagnostic medical sonography. Once students complete the program, they are prepared to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exam. Once students pass the licensure exam and requirements, they become a registered diagnostic medical sonographer. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Bergen Community College faculty and Career Services as they begin to explore career options.
Transfer Opportunities
Students pursuing the Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) in diagnostic medical sonography may consider transfer opportunities into other allied health and science majors. Students are encouraged to work closely with Bergen Community College faculty and Advising Transfer Services. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution in NJ can explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer https://njtransfer.org.
