A Medical Billing and Coding specialist is responsible for processing health insurance claims for doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Medical Billing and Coding specialists use a special coding system, which is recorded onto patients’ Electronic Health Records and used to properly process insurance claims.  They typically work in a professional office setting, stationed at a desk working on a computer.  

Skills required:

  • Must be organized
  • Must be detail-oriented so that claims are handled accurately
  • Must be comfortable working on a computer 

Employers: Medical Billing and Coding specialists can work in almost every type of clinical facility, including hospitals, doctors’ offices, and outpatient centers, and many are allowed to work from home.  

Education: Students learn medical billing and insurance standards; lCD 10, CPT and HCPCS coding. HIPAA, medical law and ethics compliance standards will be addressed.  Students are eligible to sit for the national certification examination offered by NHA (National Health Careers Association). 

Job Outlook: The medical billing and coding field is growing.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that demand for medical billing and coding specialists to rise by 11% from 2018 to 2028 – that’s “much faster than average”.
