Cruzando Caminos Present the Theatre Production of Real Women Have Curves

October 15, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Latino Heritage Committee proudly brings back to Bergen Community College the 1987 story of five Mexican immigrants –Estela García, the owner of a sewing factory in East LA; her mother, Carmen; her younger sister, Ana; and two co-workers, Pancha and Rosalí. The group works under tremendous pressure to complete a big order in a few days. Everyone but Estela has been given amnesty and temporary residency cards due to the passing of the 1986 Immigration and Reform Act. They fear immigration authorities will enter the factory and deport Estela. The five women — funny, earthy, and endearing– sew, laugh, eat, gossip, argue, and gradually complete the order by the deadline. As the play evolves, they reveal their concerns about marriage, pregnancy, weight, exploitation, immigration, and power, and celebrate their bodies! Ana, a self-proclaimed feminist and aspiring writer, most clearly represents the voice of the author, Josefina López, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico when she was five years old.
