Our Mission

The mission of the mathematics department at Bergen Community College is to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics by providing students with an awareness of the connections of mathematics to other subjects and to strengthen each student’s ability to apply mathematics to these subjects. By offering a broad selection of courses that are designed to meet diverse student needs, the mathematics department faculty promote critical thinking through course work that emphasizes problem solving and applications and introduces students to the effective uses of technology in mathematical problem solving. The department promotes scholarly activity among all of the mathematics faculty and students majoring in mathematics. The department encourages and supports faculty collaboration with colleagues from other disciplines to modify and develop mathematics courses that support other programs of study.

Serving a diverse population of students, the mathematics department seeks to instruct those students who are majoring in mathematics in order to pursue a career in education or in the private sector, other majors who need to acquire mathematical skills in order to be successful in their major, and students who need mathematics as part of their general education requirements. Studying mathematics as part of their general education helps students who need to acquire the ability to think critically, reason logically, communicate mathematical information, and do problem solving in a systematic manner in order to become more productive citizens. The Mathematics Department works in close collaboration with the Testing Center at the Meadowlands, the Henry and Edith Cerullo Learning Assistance Center, and The Office of Testing Services to provide additional assistance to students registered in any mathematics course.

Career Paths

The Associate of Science degree (A.S.)- Mathematics option is designed to provide students with the coursework needed to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a pathway to careers including teaching positions at all levels, research positions, or positions in industry in areas such as applied mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, operations research, econometrics, or market research. Students can take coursework and concentrated options in mathematics. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Bergen Community College faculty and Career Services as they begin to explore career options.

Transfer Opportunities

Students pursuing the Associate of Science degree (A.S.)- Mathematics option can transfer into majors, such as mathematics, statistics, or actuarial science. Students are encouraged to work closely with Bergen Community College faculty and Advising Transfer Services. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution in NJ can explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer https://njtransfer.org.
