Our Mission

The music program at Bergen offers associate’s degrees preparing students either for transfer to bachelor’s programs (the AFA in Music with concentrations in Performance, Popular Music and Music Production) or to directly enter the music industry (AAS degrees in Music Business and Recording Technology). As part of the college’s Performing Arts department, the program’s facilities are located in West Hall and the Ciccone Theatre and include piano and music production labs, a recital hall and full-scale concert theatre, practice rooms, and a state of the art recording studio featuring an SSL mixing console.

The music program also offers a variety of general education courses exploring a diversity of musical genres.

Career Paths

The Associate of Fine Arts degree (A.F.A.) and the Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) is designed to provide students with the coursework needed to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a bachelor’s degree in music, music theory, applied music, music business, and music technology. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a pathway to careers in music. Students can take coursework and concentrated options in applied music, music business, and music technology. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Bergen Community College faculty and Career Services as they begin to explore career options.

Transfer Opportunities

Students pursuing the Associate of Fine Arts degree (A.F.A.) and the Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) can transfer into majors, such as applied music, music business, and music technology. Students are encouraged to work closely with Bergen Community College faculty and Advising Transfer Services. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution in NJ can explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer https://njtransfer.org.
