Rhys Pollock took art courses as a part-time student at Bergen Community College to pursue a career as an art therapist.
Pollock, of Hackensack, graduated from Rutgers University in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and is now pursuing art therapy graduate programs.
“I needed studio art classes as pre-requisites for the art therapy graduate programs that I want to enroll in the future, and Bergen had exactly what I needed,” said Pollock.
In May 2025, his artwork was featured in a video collection at the Create Tomorrow: Bergen Institute for the Creative Arts Gala. “The program is full of talented students, whose work deserves a lot of credit,” he said about his peers.
Pollock commended his art instructors for being helpful and understanding. “I think the professors have been very understanding and accommodating to my specific disability needs caused by macular degeneration,” said Pollock. “I’m still navigating how exactly this disability affects my artwork and ability to draw from life, and the professors have been really helpful in that regard, since particular parts of the process are more difficult for me than others.”
