ESL / ALP
American Language Program – Paramus
The mission of the ESL / ALP – American Language Program is to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) students, from beginner to advanced levels, with the knowledge and English language skills needed to reach their academic, professional, and personal goals.
ESL has four levels of academic study (Beginner, Low Intermediate, Intermediate, Advanced), and each level consists of courses in Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Students’ starting levels are determined by results of a language placement test.
Students who test into the advanced level may be eligible to enroll in a learning community, which is a paired ESL and college-level course while completing ESL requirements.
During the final semester of ESL / ALP classes, students should prepare for the required math placement test in order to transition smoothly into their selected majors, unless they qualify for a waiver.
ESL courses are primarily offered at the Main Campus in Paramus, New Jersey with some courses available at the college’s Hackensack and Lyndhurst sites. Most courses, except SPE-100, are non-degree college credit and taught by professors with advanced degrees in linguistics and language teaching.
There are almost 1,000 ESL students in the English as a Second Language Program at BCC. The diversity of the student body is one of the program’s strengths, offering a broad exposure to the cultures of the world and providing a stimulating learning environment.
