For Native Americans, the shared music and dances in a specific type of intertribal social space—the powwow—provide opportunities for culturally diverse peoples to negotiate differences and create “sounding communities.” In this session, John-Carlos Perea of UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University will discuss the intertribal powwow and the role these events play in connecting individuals and peoples through music.
