PARAMUS, N.J. – One in 31 children (3.2 percent) is identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research. To foster dialogue on ASD and neurodiversity, journalist Eric Garcia, the author of “We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation,” will speak at Bergen Community College on Tuesday, March 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Moses Family Meeting and Training Center (Technology Education Center, room 128) at the College’s main campus at 400 Paramus Road in Paramus. The event is free, open to the public and presented by the College’s Office of Community Affairs, Office of Specialized Services and Common Read Committee.
The College has made the study of autism, neurodiversity, invisible disabilities and their portrayal in society a central focus of the current academic year, selecting Garcia’s book on the topic as the institution’s “common read.” The initiative encourages all members of the College community to read the book and participate in discussions, activities and projects surrounding the work throughout the year. Faculty also thread the book through coursework and assignments.
During the March 24 event, Garcia, a senior Washington correspondent for The Independent and MS NOW columnist, will discuss his book, which offers insight into neurodiversity and his perspective as an autistic person. Lunch will be served and Garcia will sign copies of his book.
