PARAMUS, N.J. – Gallery Bergen will open its season with “Belongings,” a photography exhibition on citizenship featuring the work of Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams and Clem Albers (1942) and Tamara Merino (2018) this month. Gallery Director Timothy Blunk curated the exhibition.
The exhibition, which explores United States citizenship in two eras – the 1940s and the present – contains numerous pieces from Lange, Adams and Albers, whose Library of Congress-supplied collection of photography document the registration, processing and internment of 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry in the West. Meanwhile, the exhibition’s contemporary work by Chilean photographer Tamara Merino – previously featured in National Geographic – examines the plight of Central American refugees who traveled over 1,000 miles through Mexico to camp on the Gateway to the Americas International Bridge in Nuevo Laredo, hoping to obtain asylum in U.S.
The gallery, located in West Hall at Bergen Community College (400 Paramus Road, Paramus), invites guests to visit Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. “Belongings” will close Saturday, Dec. 22. For more information, email [email protected].
Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls more than 14,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
