Alizeh HussainBergen Community College student Alizeh Hussain is studying computer science to become a data scientist.

Hussain chose Bergen because of its strong STEM programs, inclusive community and opportunities for students to engage. “Its flexible programs and work experiences have also allowed me to gain practical skills while studying,” said Hussain.

Her favorite course was Calculus with Professor Kaveh Saminejad, who showed her how calculus can be used in the real world. “His approach made complex concepts accessible and sparked my interest in the practical applications of calculus, especially in fields like data science,” said Hussain.

Hussain gained hands-on experience with data analysis and modeling through the STEM Student Scholars Program as an intern. She worked on a project analyzing grade distributions to examine the effectiveness of remedial courses. “This project showed me how data-driven insights could lead to meaningful changes in education and reinforced my interest in predictive analysis and data modeling,” she said.

Besides academics, Hussain is involved in the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Bergen.

She found MSA through campus events and found it to be a welcoming space where she could connect with other students who shared similar values. She later took on the vice president role within MSA. “Taking on a leadership role was my way of giving back to this community and helping create a supportive environment for others,” said Hussain.

She also took on a leadership role within PTK. “As the Director of Service, I was able to organize initiatives that made a positive impact, especially through educational outreach,” said Hussain. “This role allowed me to use my skills to support others and make a difference in areas I’m passionate about, like education and community service.”
