Bergen Community College student Joseph Liberti is studying acting with the goal of becoming a theatre actor.
“I chose to study theatre at Bergen because of the enriching curriculum program that placed me up close and personal with my craft,” said Liberti, of Englewood Cliffs. “I love the closeness between all aspects of my educational department and how we are all a large family.”
Liberti expanded his education into sustainability and environmentalism during a two-week study abroad experience in France, which was part of the Community Colleges in France Bootcamp initiative sponsored by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States.
Referred to the program by Professor Jim Bumgardner from Bergen’s theatre program and Bergen’s Study Abroad Advisor Amparo Codding, Liberti received a $1,400 scholarship from the French Embassy along with funds from the Bergen Community College Foundation to attend the study abroad experience.
“I applied for it so that I could experience a new culture and learn about a topic which always interested me, but was too nervous to commit to it for a full semester,” said Liberti. He attended the “From Conservation of Natural Heritage to Future Society: Science for Sustainable Development” bootcamp located at the Universite de Lille.
Liberti said that a major highlight of this experience was entering an inactive quarry to learn about the history of mining in the Hauts-de-France region. “Now having a taste for this new area of study, I believe it will be a lifelong passion,” he said.
Liberti expects to graduate in 2024.
