Mark Hayes, Ph.D.
PARAMUS, N.J. – Lifelong educator Mark Hayes, Ph.D., will serve an unexpired term on the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees through October 31, 2028. Hayes took the oath of office at a regular meeting of the College’s governing panel on September 10. Hayes fills a vacancy left by former Vice Chair Adam Silverstein, who departed the board this summer.
“Mark Hayes is well-known in Bergen County for the strategic focus, visionary leadership and steadying presence that he has provided school districts,” Board of Trustees Chair Dorothy Blakeslee said. “He will immediately offer perspective and guidance that will enhance the stewardship of the Bergen Board of Trustees.”
Hayes currently serves as the interim school business administrator for the South Hackensack Board of Education. He began his career more than 40 years ago in the Jersey City Public Schools district, where he held various positions including teacher, vice principal and principal. Hayes concluded his career in the Palisades Park Public School district in 2013, where he served as both school business administrator and superintendent of schools. Since 2013, he has served as an interim school business administrator and interim superintendent of schools in numerous districts throughout Bergen County. Demonstrating his continued commitment to education, public service and the community, Hayes has also served as a public library trustee in several municipalities during his career. He earned a B.A. and M.A. from New Jersey City State University (now Kean Jersey City) and a Ph.D. from Fordham University.
The College’s 12-person Board of Trustees features nine individuals appointed by the county, two by the governor, and one elected by the student body. Bergen President Eric M. Friedman, Ph.D., serves as an ex-officio member of the board.
Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls more than 24,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
