PARAMUS, N.J. – Nearing the close of its Bergenstages season, Bergen Community College’s student ensemble reconstructs 1837 Victorian London in “The Threepenny Opera,” a musical exploration written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, beginning Friday, April 11 in the Anna Maria Ciccone Theatre at the school’s main campus, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus.
A work of epic theatre challenging conventional notions of musical comedy, innocent Polly Peachum marries the criminal Macheath – better known as “Mack the Knife” – much to the disapproval of Polly’s similarly corrupt father, who controls the beggars of London. Peachum exerts his influence leading to Macheath’s arrest and sentence to death by hanging.
The production, directed by performing arts professor and Bergenstages producer Jim Bumgardner, runs Thursdays through Saturdays starting Friday, April 11 to Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. On April 12 and April 19, matinee performances take place at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the general public are $15, with discounts offered to senior citizens, Bergen faculty, staff and students. Individuals can purchase tickets by calling (201) 447-7428 or online at tickets.bergen.edu.
