What: “Securing Our Schools and the Opioid Epidemic in Suburbia”

Why: In the wake of mass shootings and a drug epidemic threatening the lives of young people throughout the United States, families continue to search for solutions that will secure the nation’s schools and preserve the innocence of education.
Suburbs like Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida and Columbine, Colorado once shared many of the same characteristics with municipalities across the country – including those in Bergen County – but now stand as chapters in a gruesome period of American history. Coupled with the rise opioids – and their use among school age children – these issues represent two of the most urgent concerns facing suburban communities.
Together with government officials, educators and community leaders, this event will discuss these issues and seek to develop a framework for affecting change.

Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017-18, enrolls 14,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
