PARAMUS, N.J. – Bergen Community College professor Maria Makowiecka, Ph.D., has earned the institution’s 2015-16 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award.

“Professor Makowiecka has consistently provided leadership for student success initiatives at the College for the past 16 years – including her most recent stewardship of the Dr. Judith K. Winn School of Honors,” Bergen Vice President of Academic Affairs William Mullaney, Ph.D., said. “This award recognizes her continued contributions to the College as a scholar and mentor.”

Makowiecka, of Tenafly, began teaching at Bergen in 2000. Since then, she has taught literature and composition courses while also serving as the co-director of the School of Honors from 2007 to 2010 and as the director from 2013 until the present. During her time at Bergen, Makowiecka spearheaded efforts with the College’s women’s studies program and literary arts series. A native of Poland, Makowiecka also advises students in the institution’s Polish club.

The NISOD honoree earned an M.A. in English literature from Warsaw University, Poland, an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the Graduate Center, City University of New York and completed additional graduate coursework at Paris University VII, France.

Makowiecka will accept her award in Austin, Texas during NISOD’s annual international conference.

Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls 15,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
