Our Mission
The mission of the surgical technology program at Bergen Community College is to train students for careers in surgical technology through a well-rounded advanced certificate program. The surgical technology program at Bergen Community College is the only community college program in the state of New Jersey and the first program to be nationally accredited. Major hospitals throughout New Jersey and the entire eastern seaboard seek graduates of the surgical technology program, often months before graduation. Our new facilities include an integrated three-room suite incorporating a state-of-the-art classroom, fully equipped “mock” operating room reflective of a real hospital operating room, and a sterilization/prep room. Students learning in this type of environment are better prepared to enter their clinical externship because of the hands-on practice and real life situations taught here.
Career Paths
The certificate in surgical technology is designed to provide students with the coursework and training needed to enter into the field as a certified surgical technician. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a pathway to careers in surgical technology. Once students complete the program, they are prepared to take the surgical technology licensure exam. Once students pass the licensure exam and requirements, they become a certified surgical technician. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with Bergen Community College faculty and Career Services as they begin to explore career options.
Transfer Opportunities
Students pursuing the certificate in surgical technology may consider transfer opportunities into other allied health and science majors. Students are encouraged to work closely with Bergen Community College faculty and Advising Transfer Services. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution in NJ can explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer https://njtransfer.org.
