Peer Mentoring: What is it?
Turning Point mentors are college students who provide vocational, academic, and social support for Turning Point students all while facilitating independence. Mentors receive specialized training and are encouraged to bring their own talents and life experiences to this position. Mentors will help students learn to navigate and access the services needed to be successful as a college student. They are a guide, role model, connector, and motivator, responsible for assisting students in making connections that will help them achieve their career, academic, and personal goals. Every mentoring match will be unique and have different outcomes that will leave a positive impression in each mentee’s life. Turning Point students receive 5 hours of individual mentoring per week during their first year of the program. Mentoring support fades once students enter their second year, and group mentoring occurs twice weekly in year two.
