PARAMUS, N.J. – With the opening of the $25.5 million Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center approaching May 17, Bergen Community College hosted a weeklong celebration of health and wellness – “Building Healthy Communities: A Celebration of Health” – through April 28.

The College’s annual organ donation awareness event served as a prelude to the main lineup, which began with a free oral cancer screening offered by the institution’s dental hygiene students April 21. (Pictured) Ardjiana Kolenovic, of Lodi, performed a screening for fellow student Amanda Lutz, of Oakland.

Throughout the week, regional professionals from businesses and nonprofit organizations provided information on health, nutrition, exercise and other learning opportunities to students, faculty and community members.

Activities also included the NJ Sharing Network’s annual 5K “Celebration of Life” walk and a mental health first aid course that introduced participants to the risk factors, warning signs and timely intervention of mental illnesses.

Built on Bergen’s commitment to health and wellness, the region’s only Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center, dedicated specifically to the instruction of health careers, will open at the main campus May 17 at 9:30 a.m. The celebration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the College’s newest state-of-the-art facility.

Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls 15,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
