TRENTON, N.J. – Bergen Community College students Noémie Broussoux-Coutard and Theranda Jashari have earned spots on the all-state academic team. Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of two-year colleges, the Coca-Cola Foundation and the New Jersey Education Association, the team features the top students from New Jersey’s 19 community colleges. Team members received medallions recognizing their achievement during a May 5 celebration – the 22nd annual “Phi Theta Kappa Day” – after meeting with legislators and policymakers in the Statehouse. The New Jersey Council of County Colleges, the state association representing New Jersey’s 19 community colleges, organizes the yearly event.
Broussoux-Coutard, of Ridgewood, served as a regional president of Phi Theta Kappa this year. She oversaw the chapters at community colleges in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
Jashari, of Garfield, ranked among only 100 U.S. students to receive the 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar award this year. She began at Bergen in 2013 shortly after immigrating to the U.S. from the Republic of Kosovo.
Both will graduate May 19 as part of Bergen’s class of 2016.
Bergen’s Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recently earned recognition as one of the top 30 chapters in the world – and 10 additional team honors recognizing the chapter’s efforts. Nearly 950 current students have earned entry into Bergen’s honor society chapter by maintaining high GPAs and completing community service projects.
Nationwide, approximately 91 percent of Phi Theta Kappa members earn an associate degree or transfer to a four-year institution, compared to the national rate of 38 percent. The organization provides its three million student members with $37 million in transfer scholarships each year. More than 1,300 chapters exist throughout the world.
Based in Paramus, Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu), a public two-year coeducational college, enrolls 15,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields. More students graduate from Bergen than any other community college in the state.
