Irene Oujo and Victoria Tahhan
PARAMUS, N.J. – Bergen County residents Irene Oujo and Victoria Tahhan became members of the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees at the July 8 meeting of the school’s governing body.
Oujo, of New Milford, received an appointment to the board until November 1 from Governor Chris Christie. A local leader in higher education, Oujo serves as the assistant director of the Latino Promise program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The program, which has achieved an 80 percent retention rate, seeks to engage the growing – but underserved in higher education – Latino population. Since 2006, Oujo has taught various classes such as literature and composition I as program faculty. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from American University.
Tahhan, of Hackensack, a May 2014 Bergen graduate, joins the board as the alumni trustee. She replaces Margarita Valdez, whose one-year appointment expired. Most recently the vice president of the Student Government Association, Tahhan graduated from Bergen as a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of two-year schools, and the Dr. Judith K. Winn School of Honors. Tahhan will attend Columbia University in September and plans a career in law. Elected by students, the alumni trustee serves on the board with full voting rights during a one-year term.
Bergen Community College (www.bergen.edu) based in Paramus is a public two-year coeducational college, enrolling nearly 17,000 students at locations in Paramus, the Philip J. Ciarco Jr. Learning Center in Hackensack and Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The College offers associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs in a variety of fields.
