Windows 11 Upgrade FAQ
Bergen Community College – ITS Department
1. Is this a new upgrade initiative?
No. Our Windows 11 rollout has been underway since January 2024. We are now continuing this planned process into the fall semester to complete upgrades across more college devices.
2. Why is Bergen upgrading to Windows 11?
Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Windows 11 offers enhanced security, faster performance, and better integration with Microsoft 365. These improvements help support your academic work, teaching, and college operations while aligning with modern technology standards.
3. Will I still have access to Microsoft Office and my college software?
Yes! Your Microsoft Office apps, college tools, and major software programs will still be available after the upgrade.
4. Will this upgrade affect my files and settings?
Your local files and settings should remain intact, but we always recommend that you back up important data (such as documents saved on your desktop) before the upgrade.
If you need help backing up your data, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
5. How will I know when my device is scheduled for an upgrade?
You will receive an email from the ITS Department with instructions and timing details before your device is upgraded. Upgrades may be scheduled during evenings, weekends, or other low-usage times to minimize disruptions.
6. What should I expect during the upgrade?
The upgrade will typically take about 1–2 hours. Your computer may restart several times.
Please make sure you save your work and close all programs before the upgrade begins.
7. Will I need to learn a completely new system?
No. Windows 11 is a refresh of Windows 10, not a complete overhaul. Most of the features you use today will still be there — just with a more modern look and some helpful improvements.
8. Where can I learn more about using Windows 11?
We offer a “Getting Started with Windows 11” workshop to help you get comfortable with the new features. Register here: http://bergen.edu/citlworkshops
