PARAMUS, N.J. – In just the last 18 years, the Bergen Community College Foundation has awarded more than $6.8 million in scholarships to students and awards for special projects. In order to provide further opportunities for local students, the foundation will host its signature gala event, the 29th annual Medallion Awards Dinner, Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. Dinner tickets are $250; sponsorship opportunities are available.

For his continued contributions in supporting educational opportunities for Bergen students, Mahwah resident Lawrence R. Inserra Jr., Inserra Supermarkets, Inc. president, will receive the 2013 Award for Merit for Corporate Responsibility and Philanthropy at the event. Mr. Inserra leads the operation of 22 ShopRite stores in the region. The company bearing the family’s name began in 1954 with Larry’s grandfather Patsy, who operated “Patsy’s” in Lyndhurst; an Inserra ShopRite now stands on that parcel of land.

Featuring music by “Steppin’ Out,” a silent auction and a high-stakes 50/50 raffle, Medallion Awards sponsorship and dinner tickets are available by emailing [email protected].

The foundation board of directors is comprised of community leaders from the public and private sector who work closely with the College to develop fundraising opportunities to meet the needs of the institution. Since its inception in 1982, total contributions received by the foundation have surpassed $17 million.
