Dr. Sheetal Ranjan is a professor of justice studies and sociology at Montclair State University with research interests centered on violence prevention and intervention, particularly through applied research. She is the founder of the Healthcare Approaches to Justice Collaborative at Montclair State University. In collaboration with Jersey Shore University Medical Center, she has secured $7.42 million in funding to establish community violence intervention programs—such as Project HEAL and Elevate—that bring healthcare approaches to justice issues. Additionally, Dr. Ranjan has served as editor and co-editor for several special issues of peer-reviewed journals and has an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and practitioner reports.
From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Ranjan chaired the Division on Women & Crime (DWC) of the American Society of Criminology. During her tenure, she led DWC’s first Congressional Briefing on Capitol Hill and launched its inaugural participation in the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. She continues to organize research-based panels as parallel events at the CSW each year. Dr. Ranjan is also a member of the UN Women End Violence Against Women (EVAW) global roster of experts.
A strong advocate for public higher education, Dr. Ranjan serves on the Board of Trustees of Bergen Community College, chairs the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges (NJCCC), and is a member of the Policy Committee for the national Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). Her public service includes appointments to the New Jersey Sexual Assault Commission (2020), the Safe & Inclusive Learning Environment Working Group of the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (2019), and the Education, Access, and Opportunity Transition Advisory Committee for NJ Governor-elect Phil Murphy (2017). She has also served as Secretary of New Jersey’s Study Commission on Violence since 2014.
Dr. Ranjan’s dedicated service has earned her numerous awards, commendations, and certificates. She is internationally recognized as an expert in violence prevention and intervention.
