What is Academic Coaching?
Academic coaching is focused on helping students become better life-long learners through examining their learning styles, habits of working, and current challenges to success. The aim of academic coaching is to heighten awareness of what it takes to achieve academic success and anchor this with new strategies, a supportive relationship, and increased personal accountability. Academic Coaching is different from tutoring in that it assists students in examining their learning styles, habits of working, and current difficulties or barriers to success.
How does it work?
Students and academic coaches meet for 1-on-1 appointments consistently throughout the semester. [Ideally, once a week.] Together, this team (the academic coach and the student) works to create and put in place more effective strategies than are the norm. Sessions are focused on developing skills to improve academic success rather than on specific content areas (i.e math, writing, etc.).
How can students make an academic coaching appointment?
Students can log in to tutortrac.bergen.edu to make their own appointments or they can contact the Tutoring Center front desk for assistance:
