About Federal Title IV Funds
Title IV is a term that refers to federal financial aid funds.
Title IV also refers to the financial aid programs for postsecondary students authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (Title IV, HEA), administered by the U.S. Department of Education, and listed in 34 CFR 668.1(c).
Title IV Funds Disbursement
Federal regulations stipulate that any federal funds disbursed to a student’s account more than allowable charges must be distributed to the student (or the parent, in the case of an undergraduate PLUS loan).
Title IV federal financial aid funds are disbursed to student accounts after the student enrollment, attendance, and eligibility verification process is complete. Students are notified of disbursements via the Bergen student portal (my.bergen.edu).
Title IV Funds Allocation Authorization
A Title IV authorization is a voluntary, student-signed agreement allowing the college to use federal financial aid (loans, grants) to pay for non-institutional charges like bookstore fees, health insurance, or library fines, rather than just tuition. Without Title IV authorization, excess aid is refunded to the student, potentially leaving an outstanding account balance
Take Control of Your Financial Aid
Don’t let a “Balance Due” stop your progress. Did you know that federal regulations usually limit how your financial aid can be used? Without your permission, your federal grants and loans can only be applied to your tuition and mandatory fees.
This means you could receive a financial aid refund check and still owe the college money for things like bookstore charges or small balances from a previous semester.
Why should I complete the Authorization Form?
By completing this one-time digital form, you allow Bergen Community College to use your federal aid to cover all your educational costs automatically.
- Cover All Charges: Use your aid for bookstore purchases and other educationally related fees.
- Handle Prior Balances: Automatically pay off up to $200 (or more with your consent) from a previous award year so you can register for classes without a “hold” on your account.
- Simplify Your Refunds: Ensure your aid is applied to your full balance first, so the refund you receive is truly yours to keep.
- One and Done: You only need to sign this once! It remains active for as long as you are a student at Bergen.
